The Major Search Engines and Their Differences
As noted above, although the basic principles of action are the same between search engine providers, the minor differences between them can lead to major differences in result relevancy. Search engine developers place different values on information based on its importance to them. For example, Yahoo! and Bing value "on-page keywords" highly, while Google values "links" highly. Also, the age of a web page can alter its value, with some search engines valuing it highly the older it is, and others decreasing its value as it ages. As an SEO, knowing what content is highly-valued in each search engine, and how it is applied mathematically, will affect your retrieval success with the various search engines.
Building Backlinks
An important factor in Search Engine Optimization is backlink worth. Since search engines set a value on links to a webpage, both the quantity and the quality of those links must be high to attain good results.
In order to be considered a "quality backlink", the linking website should:
a. Have a theme that is the same or similar to yours, and
b. Link to your site using the keywords you are optimizing for.
